In just three months, the price of rice in Vellore town has skyrocketed. Ordinary rice varieties, previously sold for around Rs 950 per 26-kg bag, now cost Rs 1,250 – a hike of Rs 300. Even premium Ponni rice, known for increasing in price with age, has seen a jump - from Rs 1,450 to Rs 1,750 per bag.
