India's Poultry Industry Seeks Zero-Duty Maize Imports Amid Soaring Prices and Ethanol Demand

India’s poultry industry, impacted by record-high maize prices due to its increased use in ethanol production, has requested permission to import maize at zero duty under an open general license (OGL). The poultry sector consumes nearly 60% of the maize produced in the country. Additionally, some industry representatives have urged the government to supply rice at concessional rates to compensate for the maize shortage. The annual 18% increase in maize prices is significantly higher than the average inflation rate and cannot be passed on to consumers through higher chicken and egg prices.
