"FCI Wheat Procurement from Uttar Pradesh Falls Short of Target for Third Consecutive Year Amid Price Disparities"

During the RMS 2024-25, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) purchased only 9.31 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of wheat from Uttar Pradesh, significantly short of the 60 LMT target. This marks the third consecutive year that procurement has not met the government-set target. Although this year's procurement is higher than the previous year's, the shortfall is mainly due to the price gap between the Minimum Support Price (MSP) and the market price. Currently, wheat prices are hovering around Rs. 2400-2450 per quintal, which is higher than the price offered by FCI. Despite good production, the decline in procurement suggests market hoarding as a price-influencing factor.
