During the first eight months of the current marketing year, imports of rapeseed meal to the European Union saw a rise of approximately 16%. Particularly notable was the increase in imports from Russia. Over this period, the EU-27 received about 681,500 tonnes of rapeseed meal, which marked an increase of 95,600 tonnes compared to the same period the previous year. Imports from Russia accounted for the largest portion, totaling 281,830 tonnes, constituting slightly over 41% of the total imports. Overall, imports increased by around 11% compared to the previous year, largely due to the competitive pricing of Russian shipments. Belarus also played a significant role, contributing 208,200 tonnes, making it the second most important country of origin for EU rapeseed meal imports. This surge in imports has impacted prices in Germany in recent weeks, particularly after the EU Commission considered raising import duties on oilseeds and their by-products from Russia and Belarus to prevent potential market destabilization caused by a sudden influx of low-cost Russian imports. Meanwhile, there has been a noteworthy increase in EU imports from Ukraine, with the country contributing 143,500 tonnes, more than double the volume from the previous year, elevating Ukraine to the third most important country of origin, followed by the United Kingdom and Serbia.
