The drought like condition has reduced South Africa's corn harvest by at least 20% and Zimbabwe's by about 60%. Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe have declared states of national disaster due to the crop failures. Typically, these three countries are self-reliant or can fulfill most of their needs, occasionally shortfall covered by imports from South Africa, the largest producer in the region. However, meeting their requirements through imports may be challenging this year due to reduced production in South Africa.
